If you're driving at all in California, you need auto insurance. Not only are there more licensed drivers (26 million) here in the Golden State than anywhere else in the U.S., but millions of visitors to our state also hit the roads each year. And yes, auto insurance is required by law.
Getting caught driving without proper insurance can mean having to contend with some severe fines or worse legal ramifications, depending on the circumstances. In the event of accidents or other incidents, it can also mean having to pay for damages and medical costs out of your own pocket.
What Does California Auto Insurance Cover?
While the specifics of auto insurance policies vary wildly, the state does require certain coverage minimums to be met. Your auto insurance policy will have to include bodily injury liability and property damage liability. You will also want to consider the conditions in which you will be driving and how frequent to make sure you have appropriate coverage.
California also requires uninsured motorist coverage (both property damage and bodily injury liability). While it can seem a bit ridiculous having coverage for uninsured motorists built into your own auto insurance policy, this is a protective measure meant to help you. That way, if you're involved in an accident where the other driver doesn't have adequate coverage, you can make sure your needs are met even if they are deemed at fault.
When Do You Need to Get Auto Insurance?
The short answer to these questions is as soon as possible. If you're a new resident to California, you will need to get your state driver's license and register your vehicle within 20 days of moving. You will need to have proof of insurance in order to register your vehicle. If you are a current resident and have recently purchased or leased a car, you will also need to insure the vehicle as a prerequisite for registering it.
